The sixth grade ELA program focuses on increasing students' abilities in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The program is focused on developing the writing process and reading strategies through the use of a student portfolio. The 6th grade portfolio concentrates on three specific writing genres: report, recounts, and persuasive essay. Reading selections from the Prentice Hall Literature text, as well as selected novels, provide opportunities for students to address current Massachusetts' standards in ELA as well as expectations of MCAS testing. Students will also have the opportunity to use technologies which have been outlined in the new Massachusetts Common Core Standards.

Homework will be given to students every Friday and will be due the following Friday. It consists of a two sided academic vocabulary sheet as well as a reading comprehension passage. These align to the Grade 6 standards. Vocabulary will be available in class as well as online.
